A Huge Collection of Type

I love typography, so I decided to create a post of all the people I look up to in the field. I personally love hand drawn letters but I also feel that it is not what font you use it is how you use it. Helvetica and even Comic Sans are beautiful faces when used right, but they can also be a default for the unimaginative. So, here it is, a list of inspirational and experimental typographers and their work from around the world. From logotypes to fonts to hand lettering to calligraphy to graffiti, this post has it all.

A great site you never want to be featured on!

youthoughtwewouldntnotice.com is a great site that showcases all the copies and bites in the art and design world. Now I am all for using a piece for inspiration, appropriating it or recontextualizing it, but some of these examples are exact replicas. One of my favorite recent posts is this, an online t-shirt company, Jay Jays, decided to use concepts from T-Shirt Hell.

Quick, do _________ before the world ends!!!!!!!

Fill in the blank; what are you putting on the list of to-dos before the big twenty twelve? That's right, one of the smartest civilizations to exist predicted the world will experience a great rejuvenation. It represents a new chapter in the world as the Mayan calendar recycles. Get ready, because on December 21st, 2012 at exactly 11:11am GMT, after 5,125 solar years, the world will be reborn. I'm hoping for all the credit card companies computers to fail, but I'm betting on a mild spiritual awakening leading slowly to change.

I decided to do a tribute piece.

90210

I have been seeing the CW's new ad campaign for 90210 on the buses around town.

I don't know if it is just the hot women in bikinis or the use of type as imagery, but I have been thinking about this ad for the last week. So I decided to recreate it, The Cooler style.

Papa's Soul Food Menu

This menu is rad! It is far from the mundane food list you find at every other restaurant, and best of all, the design fits the style and concept of the restaurant (I know, it doesn't seem that hard but I am amazed at some of the horrible menu designs around). Even though I usually know what I want I still spend a good fifteen minutes staring at their menu, it's great, I especially like the diagram of the chicken sandwich. Every time I go back to my hometown of Eugene I make it a point to go down to 5th and Blair and get the best pulled pork sandwich in Oregon; or if I am feeling like something spicy, the amazing jerked chicken. The menu was designed by Tony Figoli.

Holy crap... birds?

A few YouTube videos showing the stunning formations Starling flocks create before nesting time in spring. I can't believe these are birds, around 300,000 of them, I couldn't create something this beautiful if my life depended on it. They are so fluid, like one organism.
